![]() Ever since I was a child copying the art deco covers of my Evelyn Waugh Penguin Classics in pen and ink and colouring them with poster paints (we didn't have the internet then, OK), I have thought one of the best jobs in the world is the book jacket designer. Except for the fact that they have to deal with authors saying things like, 'Hmm, that's not what I imagined. And yet I can't really say what I did imagine.' In this feature for Books and the City, I try to explain how the UK and US cover designs came about. Just quickly, though, and without my poster paints.
